The legendary Mark Twain commented, “If the Platte were somehow turned up on edge, it just might make a respectable river”.  But the early explorers never saw the headwaters of the North Platte, in North Park valley, before it enters the granite chasm of Northgate Canyon. It is here the North Platte was "turned up on edge" as the river drops at an average gradient of 20 feet per mile, forming world class rapids like Windy Hole, Cowpie, "OFR", Tootsie Roll, Stovepipe and more.  Designated a "Wilderness Area" this river corridor offers sightings of bear, moose, cougars, bald eagles and river otters to mention only a few of the thrills.
